Technical Note - Risks of Using Facial Recognition Technologies for Public Security Purposes
Technical, legal, and ethical arguments on the risks of using facial recognition technologies (FRT) for public security purposes in Brazil.
In 2022, the city government of Porto Alegre announced plans to expand the use of facial recognition cameras in public spaces. This type of technology, “Facial Recognition Technology” (FRT), will be used for public security purposes. But what are the risks associated with using this type of technology, and what should you know before forming an opinion on the subject?
In this document, titled “Technical Note: Risks of Using Facial Recognition Technologies for Public Security Purposes”, researchers from the AI Robotics Ethics Society (AIRES) and the Network for Safe and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (RAIES) present arguments spanning technical (regarding the technology itself), legal (regarding the legality of FRTs), and ethical (regarding the ethical problems we face when using FRTs) dimensions.
We hope our work can be used to inform the discussion about the use of FRTs for public security purposes.
