AIRES Mission

Learn about the mission of the AI Robotics Ethics Society (AIRES) and the organization's history.

AIRES at PUCRS is committed to promoting and advancing the AIRES Mission. Our mission is to focus on educating tomorrow’s AI leaders in ethical principles, to help ensure that AI is created ethically and responsibly.

As technology advances at an exponential pace, it is imperative that we begin to think about how AI will interact with and impact society across the many facets of daily life, with a focus on ethical implications and their implementation within AI systems.

Notably, engagement with AI ethics by students and professionals has so far been relatively incipient. It is of the utmost importance to regulate AI through the lens of ethical discussion and implementation, given that, in the fast-moving landscape we live in, AI already permeates our daily lives in numerous ways.

As such, the AI Robotics Ethics Society was founded in 2018 at UCLA (Los Angeles, USA) by Aaron Hui, with the goal of promoting awareness of, and the importance of, the ethical implementation and regulation of AI. AIRES is today a nonprofit organization with chapters at universities such as USC (University of Southern California), Caltech (California Institute of Technology), Stanford University, Cornell University, Brown University, the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Princeton University, and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
